Joint NMR and Neutron Scattering Study Investigates New Heavy Fermion Material
CeVGe3 is a heavy fermion material with a hexagonal structure that undergoes antiferromagnetic ordering below 6 K. In this work we collaborated with scientists from Tohoku University in Sendai, Japan, and at the University of Sydney in Australia, to determine that the antiferromagnetic ordering has a spiral structure. The Ce spins align ferromagnetically within each plane, but rotate by 88 degrees from one plane to the next, forming a spiral along the c-axis of the crystal. Magnetic fields aligned perpendicular to this axis destabilize the spiral, giving rise to a metamagnetic field-induced phase. This behavior is similar to another well-known heavy fermion material, CeRhIn5, which as a tetragonal structure.
